Phil Collins in 400 words (ish)
Phil Collins was born in London in 1951, his father was an insurance agent and his mother worked at a toy shop and later for a performing arts school. Collins was given a drum kit when he was 5 and as he got older, he started playing alongside music on the television and radio.
As a child, Collins was highly influenced by The Beatles, especially Ringo Starr. When he was a teenager, Collins received piano and music lessons from his father’s aunt and took drumming lessons. When he was 14, he quit school and became a pupil at Barbara Speake. This is where he landed roles like the Artful Dodger at two West End runs of Oliver! And a role in Calamity the Cow.
Phil Collins has released 8 studio albums, 1 live album, 2 soundtrack albums and 50 singles. He has sold more than 150 million records worldwide and his first solo album ‘Face Value’ released in 1981 reached no. 1 in the UK, Canada and Sweden.
In the UK, Collins has had 3 no.1 singles including ‘You Can’t Hurry Love’ in 1982, ‘Easy Lover’ in 1985 and ‘Groovy Kind of Love’ in 1988. He has had a further 10 singles in the top 10 including ‘In The Air Tonight’ released in 1981 and reached no.2 and ‘Two Hearts’ released in 1988 and reached no.6.
Collins had 6 albums reach no.1 in the UK including ‘No Jacket Required’ (1985), ‘…But Seriously’ (1989), ‘Both Sides’ (1993) and ‘Going Back’ (2010). Collins has won 8 Grammy Awards including Album of the Year in 1986 for ‘No Jacket Required’ and Best Soundtrack Album in 2000 for Disney’s Tarzan. He has also won 3 American Music Awards, 6 Brit Awards, 4 Billboard Music Awards, 1 Academy Award and 2 Golden Globes. He has also received the Disney Legend Award in 2002 and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
