David Bowie in 250 words (ish)

David Bowie was an English singer and is seen as one of the most influential musicians of the last century. He was born in Brixton London in 1947 and died in 2016. As a child Bowie was inspired by a collection of American 45s brought by his father. Shortly after this he took up the ukulele and started to play the piano. When Bowie was in school, he was punched in the left eye and after treatment was left with a permanently dilated pupil, one of his most recognisable features.

Bowie released 27 studio albums, 11 live albums and a whopping 128 singles. In the UK he had 5 No.1 singles and 25 singles in the UK top 10. His No.1s include ‘Space Oddity (1975)’, ‘Ashes to Ashes’ and ‘Let’s Dance’. Out of the 27 studio albums Bowie released 11 made it to No.1 in the UK.

‘Scary Monster and Super Creeps’ (1980) stayed at No.1 for 2 weeks. ‘Aladdin Sane’ (1973) and ‘Pin Ups’ (1973) both spent 5 weeks each at No.1. ‘Let’s Dance’ released in 1983 was Bowies 15th studio album. The album has sold 10.7 million copies worldwide and in the UK is on its silver certification.

Throughout his career, David Bowie had many alter egos, the most well-known being Ziggy Stardust. There is a statue of Bowie in Aylesbury where he debuted as Ziggy Stardust. His 5th studio album ‘The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars’ (1972) was based around a concept of a fictional glam rock star sent to save Earth from an apocalyptic disaster. The single ‘Starman’ was released on the album and was inspired by the film ‘The Wizard of Oz’. The chorus is loosely inspired by the song ‘Over the Rainbow’. The songs ‘Hot Love’ and ‘Telegram’ by T-Rex also inspired the song.

David Bowie won many awards over his career including 6 Grammy awards and 4 Brit Awards. In 1999 the French government made him Commander of the Ordre Des Arts et des Letters. However, he declined a knighthood in 2003 saying it was not what he spent working for.

The spider Heterophoda Davidbowie was named after him in 2008 and in 2015 an asteroid was named 342843 Davidbowie.

There's one big thing that sets us apart from our competition. We do it all for free. From the very beginning our aim was to create a radio station we would want to listen to. Twenty two years later and Forest Radio is the fastest growing internet radio stations in Essex. But in order for us to continue playing the good time oldies we need your help.

Reggae is a musical genre that originated from Jamaica and gained popularity in the 1960s. The genre was highly influenced by American jazz, ska, rocksteady and rhythm and blues. Usually, reggae music is off beat, has a slow tempo and is drum and bass heavy. Lyrics often were politicised and stressed the social and economic injustices in the world. The genre is often linked to Rastafarianism and has spread to countries across the world. Reggae spread to the UK in the 70s and influenced bands such as UB40, Steel Pulse and Aswad. Desmond Dekker, Bob Marley and the Wailers and UB40 are three of the most influential and successful reggae artists of all time. See below a little about each artist.
