10 SINGERS YOU DIDN'T KNOW WERE IN THE MOVIES

While watching Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows last week I noticed that Alice Cooper made a cameo performing No More Mr Nice Guy and Ballard Of Dwight Fry. It got me thinking, which other films have cameos from musicians.

So, I made a list, 10 singers you may not have known were in your favourite films.
1. Tom Jones in Mars Attacks

Directed by Tim Burton, this all-star 1996 classic was a spin on the 1950’s style of an alien invasion.  Loads of celebrities and musicians appeared in this movie including Jack Black, Michael J. Fox and Danny DeVito.

Playing himself, Tom Jones is performing It’s Not Unusual when the Martians invade and replace the backing singers.

2. Alice Cooper in Wayne’s World

Wayne’s world (1992) is a much-loved American comedy about a pair of rock music lovers who host a public access television show starring Mike Myers and Dana Carvey. Alice Cooper has cameoed in many films including Dark Shadows, Diary of a Mad Housewife and Bigfoot.

Alice Cooper's scene see Wayne and Garth going backstage to meet Alice after his Milwaukee show.

3. Keith Richards in Pirates of the Caribbean At Worlds End.

The third Pirates of the Caribbean film starring Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Kiera Knightly sees the trio venture to gather the 7 pieces of 8 from Davey Jones.  During their adventures We meet  meeting Captain Teague, Jack Sparrows father, played by the legendary Keith Richards.

Keith Richards is actually a close friend of Johnny Depp and he also appeared in the fourth film, On Strangers Tide.

4. Aretha Franklin in Blues Brothers

Originally released as a single in 1968, 'Think' was reimagined into the musical The Blues Brothers staring Dan Ackroyd and John Belushi in 1980. 'Think' reached No.10 on the UK charts in 1967.

Aretha Franklin played Mrs Murphy, wife to Matt Murphy who owns a restaurant. 'Think' was performed in the restaurant to try to stop her husband re-joining the band.

5. Ian Brown in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Ian Brown, lead singer of The Stone Roses, made a cameo in the third Harry Potter film as the wizard in the Leaky Cauldron reading A Brief History of Time. Ian Brown is one of many people who have appeared in Harry Potter, some others being John Cleese, Johnny Greenwood and Jarvis Cocker.

His cameo was brief, blink and you'll miss it, but it’s cool that he’s part of the wizarding world.

6. David Bowie in Zoolander

One of my favourite cameos is in the film Zoolander. David Bowie’s cameo is definitely one to remember. Starring Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson and Will Ferrell.

David Bowie plays himself as the judge of ‘The Walk Off’ between Derek and Hansel, his famous line being 'If nobody has any objections, I believe I might be of service.' What a legend.

7. Kylie Minogue in Moulin Rouge!

Another blink and you'll miss it cameo. In the 2001 hit musical Moulin Rouge! Kylie plays the Green Fairy on a bottle of Absinthe, singing ‘The Sound of Music’.

Kylie starred along side Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman. Her cameo was small but defiantly rememberable.

8. Dave Grohl in The Muppets

The Muppets Movie released in 2011 is about Kermit getting the band back together after The Muppets had all gone their own way. Fozzie bear is playing with a tribute band The Moopets.

Well known for his work with the Foo Fighter and Nirvana, Dave Grohl plays Animool in the band The Moopets.

9. Madonna in Die Another Day

Not only did Madonna sing the theme to the 2002 James Bond film but she also cameoed as the character Verity, a fencing instructor, who meets Bond in the fencing room and introduces him to Gustav Graves.

Die Another Day (theme song) reached No.3 on the UK charts.

10. Peggy Lee in Lady and the Tramp

This Disney Classic film released in 1955 is the 15th film in the Classics list and stared Peggy Lee as Darling, wife to Jim Dear, Is and Am and Peg.

The Pekingese stray sings He’s A Tramp a song about the notorious dog Tramp. Co-written and performed by Peggy Lee this remains one of Disney’s most loved songs.

Reggae is a musical genre that originated from Jamaica and gained popularity in the 1960s. The genre was highly influenced by American jazz, ska, rocksteady and rhythm and blues. Usually, reggae music is off beat, has a slow tempo and is drum and bass heavy. Lyrics often were politicised and stressed the social and economic injustices in the world. The genre is often linked to Rastafarianism and has spread to countries across the world. Reggae spread to the UK in the 70s and influenced bands such as UB40, Steel Pulse and Aswad. Desmond Dekker, Bob Marley and the Wailers and UB40 are three of the most influential and successful reggae artists of all time. See below a little about each artist.
