Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) are an English rock band created in 1970 by Jeff Lynne, Roy Wood and Bev Bevan. Their sound is fusion between classical arrangements and 60’s pop, the band used a combination of classical and rock instruments. Jeff Lynne wrote and sang most of the band’s songs.
The band released 14 studio albums, 7 live albums and 50 singles. ‘The Electric Light Orchestra’ was the bands first studio album, released in 1971 it reached 32 on the UK charts and contained their first single ‘10538 Overture’ which reached no.9 on the UK charts.
ELO have had 1 No.1 single ‘Xanadu’ with Olivia Newton John and 15 singles which made it into the top 10. They also had 4 albums ‘Discovery’ (1979), ‘Time’ (1981), ‘All Over the World- The Very Best of’ (2005), ‘From Out of Nowhere’ (2019). ‘Discovery’ spent 5 weeks at No.1 containing singles like ‘Shine a Little Love’, ‘The Diary of Horace Wimp’, ‘Don’t Bring Me Down’, ‘Confusion’ and ‘Last Train to London’.
Jeff Lynne (lead vocals, guitar, piano, bass drums) and Richard Tandy (piano, synthesiser, backing vocals) are the principle and current members of the band but past members include Roy Wood (vocals, guitar, cello, oboe, bassoon, 1970-1972), Bev Bevan (drum, 1970-1986), Hugh McDowell (cello, 1972-1979), Mik Kaminski (violin, 1973-1986) and Kelly Groucutt (bass, lead vocals, 1974-1983).
ELO were inactive between 2001 and 2014, the band did many mini reunions however in 2014 was reformed under the name Jeff Lynne’s ELO. Since the reunion, ELO have released 3 albums including a live album ‘Wembley or bust’ (2017).
