ABBA in 250 words (ish)
ABBA were a Swedish pop group formed in 1972. Their name is an acronym from the first names of the 4 members: Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad.
The four members were already well known in Sweden within other bands but came together for the first time in 1970 as a Swedish supergroup. After winning the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest they went on to become one of the most commercially successful acts in popular music history
In total ABBA released 8 studio albums, 2 live albums and 73 singles. Their biggest studio album was ‘Arrival’ (1976) which contains ‘Dancing Queen’, ‘Money, Money, Money’ and ‘Knowing Me, Knowing You’. In the UK the album sold over 1.5 million copies and reached Platinum status.
ABBA have sold over 380 million records worldwide and the majority of their songs were written by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus.
ABBA began as two married couples, Agnetha with Björn and Benny with Anni-Frid Lyngstad. Both marriages collapsed during the band's most successful period. Many of the songs written this time dealt with the tensions within the band. ‘The Winner Takes It All’ being a good example of this. The band stopped recording together in 1982.
A musical ‘Mamma Mia!’ was written by Catherine Johnson based around some of ABBA's songs. It became a huge success on London and Broadway stages before being turned into a movie in 2008 with a sequel in 2018. This has helped to keep the band in the public consciousness.

Reggae is a musical genre that originated from Jamaica and gained popularity in the 1960s. The genre was highly influenced by American jazz, ska, rocksteady and rhythm and blues. Usually, reggae music is off beat, has a slow tempo and is drum and bass heavy. Lyrics often were politicised and stressed the social and economic injustices in the world. The genre is often linked to Rastafarianism and has spread to countries across the world. Reggae spread to the UK in the 70s and influenced bands such as UB40, Steel Pulse and Aswad. Desmond Dekker, Bob Marley and the Wailers and UB40 are three of the most influential and successful reggae artists of all time. See below a little about each artist.
