Bob Dylan in 250 words (ish)

Bob Dylan (Robert Allen Zimmerman) is an American singer-song writer born in Minnesota in 1941. He has sold more than 100 million records and is one of the best-selling artists of all time. Recording since 1961, Dylan has released 39 studio albums, 12 live albums and 94 singles. In the UK Dylan has had 8 number 1 albums including The Free Wheelin Bob Dylan (1964), Self Portrait (1970), New Morning (1970). In total he has spent 25 weeks at the top if the UK album charts. Dylan was influenced by many artists including Elvis Presley and Little Richard. During High School he would play Little Richards songs on the piano.

‘The Freewheelin Bob Dylan’was his second studio album and contains a few songs which are considered protest songs. The lyrics were inspired by news stories of the time which included the fears around nuclear warfare and the civil rights movement. Blowin In The Wind is a protest song written by Bob Dylan for his second album containing many rhetorical questions about war, peace and freedom.

Another of his greatest hits is Mr Tambourine Man released in 1965 on the acoustic album Bring It All Back Home. Inspired by poet Arthur Rimbaud and film maker Fegerico Fellini, the song has been covered by many artists including The Byrds and Stevie Wonder.

Dylan has won 15 awards in total including 11 Grammy Awards. He has 5 songs on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and he was the first musician to receive a Noble Prize in 2016 for Literature.

There's one big thing that sets us apart from our competition. We do it all for free. From the very beginning our aim was to create a radio station we would want to listen to. Twenty two years later and Forest Radio is the fastest growing internet radio stations in Essex. But in order for us to continue playing the good time oldies we need your help.

Reggae is a musical genre that originated from Jamaica and gained popularity in the 1960s. The genre was highly influenced by American jazz, ska, rocksteady and rhythm and blues. Usually, reggae music is off beat, has a slow tempo and is drum and bass heavy. Lyrics often were politicised and stressed the social and economic injustices in the world. The genre is often linked to Rastafarianism and has spread to countries across the world. Reggae spread to the UK in the 70s and influenced bands such as UB40, Steel Pulse and Aswad. Desmond Dekker, Bob Marley and the Wailers and UB40 are three of the most influential and successful reggae artists of all time. See below a little about each artist.
