Little Richard in 250 words (ish)
Little Richard (Richard Wayne Penniman 1932-2020) was an American singer. Known as the Architect of Rock and Roll, Little Richard was regarded as a pioneer in the evolution popular music. He has been cited as an influence for many musicians over many genres most notably James Brown, Ray Charles and Prince.
He was regarded by many as one of the first crossover artists appealing to audiences of all races. As a child Richard was inspired by gospel music. His first break was in 1951 and signed a record contract with RCA. Between 1953 and 1960 he performed with the band The Upsetters.
In the UK Little Richard’s biggest hits were ‘Long Tall Sally’ in 1957 and ‘Baby Face’ in 1959. He released 15 studio albums, 3 live albums and 37 singles and has sold over 30 million records worldwide. ’Here’s Little Richard’ was released in 1957 and was his debut album. This album contains two of his biggest hits, ‘Jenny, Jenny’, ’Long Tall Sally’ and ‘Tutti Frutti’. His musical style captured the hearts of many, the loud volume, beats and rhythms helped to inspired musicians and define the rock and roll genre.
Richard performed and wrote songs with many artists including The Beach Boys for the film ‘The Telephone’, Jon Bon Jovi for the film ‘Young Guns’ with the song ‘You Really Got Me’, and a duet with Elton John called ‘The Power’. He recorded a cover of ‘Itsy Bitsy Spider’ for the Disney album ‘For Our children’.

Reggae is a musical genre that originated from Jamaica and gained popularity in the 1960s. The genre was highly influenced by American jazz, ska, rocksteady and rhythm and blues. Usually, reggae music is off beat, has a slow tempo and is drum and bass heavy. Lyrics often were politicised and stressed the social and economic injustices in the world. The genre is often linked to Rastafarianism and has spread to countries across the world. Reggae spread to the UK in the 70s and influenced bands such as UB40, Steel Pulse and Aswad. Desmond Dekker, Bob Marley and the Wailers and UB40 are three of the most influential and successful reggae artists of all time. See below a little about each artist.
