The Carpenters in 250 words (ish)

The Carpenters were a sibling duo from America (1969-1983). Karen (vocals/drums) and Richard Carpenter (Keyboards/vocals) were musical in their childhood and started their professional career in the late 1960’s. They released 14 studio albums (2 Christmas albums), 2 live albums and 46 singles. In the UK they had 3 number one albums ‘The Singles 1969-1973’, ‘Horizon’ and ‘Only Yesterday’.

Their musical style was referred to as easy listening, often including lush production with strings and vocal layering thanks to Richard’s love of arranging. Karen’s vocal style has been cited as an influence to many singers, Paul McCartney called it ‘the best female voice in the world’.

The Carpenters signed with the Herb Albert and Jerry Moss’s A&M label in 1969 and released their first album ‘Ticket To Ride’ (formerly Offering) in 1969. They have sold more than 90 million records world-wide to date and are the seventh top selling artists of the 1970s.

Some of their best-selling singles included ‘Top of the World’, ‘Close To You’, ‘Superstar’, and ‘We’ve Only Just Begun’. ‘Top of the World’ has been used in many films and TV shows including ‘Shrek Forever After’, ‘Dark Shadows’ and the Japanese TV show ‘Miseinen’. They released the Christmas Album ‘Christmas Portrait’ in 1978 and included their cover of ‘Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town’ and their Christmas Hit ‘Merry Christmas Darling’.

Karen Carpenter died in 1983 after complications from anorexia and in late 1983 they were given a star of the Hollywood Walk of Fame. After Karen’s death Richard still pursued his music career releasing a solo album ‘Time’ in 1987.

There's one big thing that sets us apart from our competition. We do it all for free. From the very beginning our aim was to create a radio station we would want to listen to. Twenty two years later and Forest Radio is the fastest growing internet radio stations in Essex. But in order for us to continue playing the good time oldies we need your help.

Reggae is a musical genre that originated from Jamaica and gained popularity in the 1960s. The genre was highly influenced by American jazz, ska, rocksteady and rhythm and blues. Usually, reggae music is off beat, has a slow tempo and is drum and bass heavy. Lyrics often were politicised and stressed the social and economic injustices in the world. The genre is often linked to Rastafarianism and has spread to countries across the world. Reggae spread to the UK in the 70s and influenced bands such as UB40, Steel Pulse and Aswad. Desmond Dekker, Bob Marley and the Wailers and UB40 are three of the most influential and successful reggae artists of all time. See below a little about each artist.
