Dusty Springfield in 250 words (ish)
Dusty Springfield (born Mary O’Brien) was a British singer (1939-1999) enjoying her main success during the 1960’s. She was a mezzo-soprano and is still regarded as one of the most successful British female performers. Dusty was an early example of the genre later classed as blue-eye soul and is often cited as a fashion icon of the Swinging Sixties. Her style included evening dresses, big bleached blonde hair and lavish make up.
She released 21 studio albums, 1 live album and 69 singles. ‘You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me’ was her only UK number one (1966). Her other big hits included ‘Son Of A Preacher Man’, ‘Little by Little’ and ‘I Close My Eyes and Count To Ten’. Her 1969 Dusty in Memphis
album is often referred to as one of the best examples of her genre.
Dusty started her career in 1958 when she joined The Lana Sisters. In 1960 she formed The Springfields who had two top 5 UK hits ‘Island Of Dreams’ and ‘Say I Won’t Be There’. The group released 3 studio albums and 12 singles.
Following a less successful spell during the 1970’s, Dusty had more chart success in the late 80’s which included collaborations with Pet Shop Boys, Hall & Oates and Dan Hartman. In 1990, her thirteenth studio album ‘Reputation’ was her first in 8 years.
In 1999 she received an OBE just 3 months before her death from breast cancer. She was inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame two weeks after her death by Elton John.

Reggae is a musical genre that originated from Jamaica and gained popularity in the 1960s. The genre was highly influenced by American jazz, ska, rocksteady and rhythm and blues. Usually, reggae music is off beat, has a slow tempo and is drum and bass heavy. Lyrics often were politicised and stressed the social and economic injustices in the world. The genre is often linked to Rastafarianism and has spread to countries across the world. Reggae spread to the UK in the 70s and influenced bands such as UB40, Steel Pulse and Aswad. Desmond Dekker, Bob Marley and the Wailers and UB40 are three of the most influential and successful reggae artists of all time. See below a little about each artist.
