Stevie Wonder in 250 words (ish)
Stevie Wonder (Stevland Hardaway Morris) was born in Michigan in May 1950. He became blind shortly after his birth was regarded as a child prodigy from the age of 11 when he signed with Tamla Motown. His first single, ‘Fingertips’ was released when he was 13 and reached No.1 in the USA. He is the youngest artist to reach No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Charts.
Wonder has released 23 studio albums, 4 live albums, 3 soundtrack albums and 98 singles. He has sold over 100 million records worldwide. His single ‘I just Called To Say I Love You’ topped 19 charts making it one of his most successful. Wonder has composed music for films including ‘The Woman in Red’ and ‘Jungle Fever’.
During the 1970’s he released a series of influential albums often regarded as his best work culminating in the double album ‘Songs In The Key of Life’. During this period, Stevie fused funk, jazz and soul whilst playing many instruments himself and experimenting with early synthesizers. He was also a pioneer of digital recording.
Stevie Wonder has won 25 Grammy awards, including 3 best selling albums awards. In 1966 he was awarded a Grammy Lifetime Achievement award. In 2017 he was made an honorary Doctor of Music at Yale University. He is also well known for his civil rights work. He is one of the United Nations Messengers of Peace and has received a Life Time Achievement Award from the National Civil Rights Museum.

Reggae is a musical genre that originated from Jamaica and gained popularity in the 1960s. The genre was highly influenced by American jazz, ska, rocksteady and rhythm and blues. Usually, reggae music is off beat, has a slow tempo and is drum and bass heavy. Lyrics often were politicised and stressed the social and economic injustices in the world. The genre is often linked to Rastafarianism and has spread to countries across the world. Reggae spread to the UK in the 70s and influenced bands such as UB40, Steel Pulse and Aswad. Desmond Dekker, Bob Marley and the Wailers and UB40 are three of the most influential and successful reggae artists of all time. See below a little about each artist.
