Suzi Quatro in 250 words (ish)
Suzi Quatro is an American rock singer-songwriter born in Michigan, 1950. She started music at a young age performing in her father’s jazz band The Art Quarto Trio. Later she joined her sister in an all-girl band called The Pleasure Seekers, the band toured for 7 years where she played bass guitar and was the lead singer.
In the UK Quatro has had two No.1 singles ‘Can the Can’ (1973) and ‘Devil Gate Drive’ (1974). She has released 17 studio albums, 1 live album and 54 singles. Quatro has sold over 50 million records and was the first woman to become a major rock star as a bass guitar player.
Quatro is a multi-instrumentalist and covers many genres like glam rock, garage rock and hard rock. She often shows her bass stills during solos in songs and would also appear as just the bass player and not the singer. Her first album ‘Suzi Quatro’ released in 1973 reached No.2 in Australia and contains one of her most famous singles ‘Can the Can’.
Quatro’s sixth studio album ‘Suzi… and Other Four Letter Words’ was released in 1979 and was the last album to be recorded with RAK, she later moved to Britain and signed with Dreamland Records where she released ‘Rock Hard’ in 1980. This was her last studio album to chart until 2006 when she released ‘Back to The Drive’, her eleventh studio album with EMI.
Suzi has received six Bravo Otto Awards and was awarded a honorary doctorate in Music from Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge. In 2013 she was awarded the Woman of Valor Award for inspiring female musicians.
Quatro has appeared in many TV programmes including ‘Minder’, ‘Midsummer Murders’ and ‘Happy Days’. In 2019 the film ‘Suzi Q' was released in Australia about her life and struggles during her career.
